How To Become a Gym Rat, 101

I don't know about you but my "New Year Resolutions" normally include the same goals.

Appropriate gym attire
- Learn a new skill
- Get more active in the gym
- Become a princess

...Not necessarily in that order.

As the years have passed, I've added new skill sets like baking and cake decorating, glass etching, and tying a cherry stem with my tongue. More notably, I've become a total gym rat as I continue to push myself to be more and more active. (I'm still working on the princess thing.)

Anyhoo, while my resolutions may be different than yours, chances are "Get more active in the gym" is also on your list. Once a timid gym mouse myself, I've put together a few tips to help you achieve "Master Gym Rat" status.

1. EVERYONE started as a beginner
Walking into a gym for the first time (or if you're like me for the 30th "first" time) can be very intimidating. The weight machines look like complicated torture devices and the long row of dumbbells can make anybody rethink their goal. Add in a handful of fit people who know how to use the torture devices and you start to think, "Maybe I don't need to be more active after all..." Just remember, every single person in the gym was once in your shoes. While they may not experience the same challenges or have the same goals, every single person walked into a gym for the first time not knowing what to do. Find a gym employee, watch how others use the equipment, and do your own research on what to use and how to use it. You'll feel right at home before you know it.

2. Wear Gym Appropriate Clothes
Blue jeans, flip flops and/or steel toe boots will definitely keep you from the coveted title of 'Gym Rat'. Make sure you're wearing clothes designed for being active. Tennis shoes, athletic shorts and a tank top are great options not only for comfort but for safety. Ever drop a 45lbs weight plate on your toe? Me either but I'm sure it would hurt.

3. Put Your Phone Away

Unless your adjusting your play list or checking the time, your phone should be the least of your concerns. Not only will it distract you from your workout but it unnecessarily prolongs the amount of time you are using shared gym equipment. While you may be more interested in reading about the latest gossip of the Brangelina divorce, someone else is interested in smashing their last PR on the weight bench you're sitting on.

4. Proper Supplementation
Any effective weight loss plan has to include a balanced diet and proper supplementation. While you don't need to take 30 pills every 2 hours while carrying around a gallon of water. (You know you've seen those guys.) You do need to make sure you have a plan in place to help promote your success. I definitely encourage you to do your own research but a good pre-workout and protein are two great places to start! I highly recommend RSP DyNo Pre-workout specifically designed to provide energy and increase your work capacity (plus it tastes GREAT) and any of their whey protein blends. (My absolute favorite is their Cinnamon Bun. You'll feel like you're ruining your workout by drinking this but I PROMISE it's good for you!) Check out my product review for them here!

5. Have Fun
Last but definitely not least, enjoy yourself. Try new machines, different exercises. Check out a fitness class or sit in on a yoga session. Regardless of what you do.. HAVE FUN DOING IT! Just because you're "working out", doesn't mean it has to feel like work. Fitness is a journey - not a job.
